My name is Alicia Thriver.
I was raised as an American Muslim in a mixed cultural Arab American family. I entered a semi-arranged marriage at the age of nineteen to my step-cousin. After the birth of my first daughter my ex-husband requested we leave the US to raise her in a Muslim country in the Middle East. Years later in Kuwait, when my daughters were five and eight, I started to have an awakening. I realized that along the path of tradition and cultural conformity, my daughter's voices would not be heard. I was shaken to my core. From there I began a spiritual journey as a Mother to find what it meant to be a woman, a Muslim, and more importantly, to love unconditionally. I was determined to change my course, going against everything I had ever known or believed to be true, in order to follow my own Hidden Calling. I soon found only one option remained: to leave it all behind and escape not only an increasingly violent marriage, but an entire country in time, or risk losing my daughters. Read my book, Hidden Calling: A Mother's Courage Unveiled, to go along on a courageous journey of how I removed the veil of trauma and sifted through the storm of my new desires to be seen and heard, so my daughters could be free. -Alicia Thriver |
Reviews
"This is about a woman’s struggle to claim and reclaim her voice, her identity, and her power, when everything in her world, since the beginning of her life, is telling her not to. It shows how power is taken, and how it can be taken back—clearly, cleanly, and without resorting to violence." -Karen Fisher, Author of A Sudden Country |
